  • Illegal Immigrants

What's your opinion on illegal immigrants, people smugglers etc? I feel sorry for these people risking life and limb in leaky old boat trying to get into Australia, but we can't take everyone, and how many are not real refugees but 'economic' immigrants looking for a home in a more affluent country. Are the ones that jump the queue taking the spots that would be allocated to others in refugee camps etc, does anyone know the story here?

    Illegal Immigrants

yEAH IT'S A DIFFICULT ONE ESPECIALLY IN AUSTRALIA WHICH HAS SUCH A GREAT HISTORY FOR TAKING REFUGEES.

My thoughts vary, if we Australians were presumptuous enough to help the good ol US of A invade (yes invade and occupy) another country and turn it into the utter mess it has now become (Iraq and Afghanistan, Viet Nam etc.) then we must be duty bound to assist the very people whose lives we have wreaked in a variety of manner.

Our new Prime Minister is just as guilty as the last one when he says that anyone who says that "terrorists" are NOT amongst the refugees .... of course they bloody are (or can be). This has been a time honered method of getting out of trouble , hide yourself amongst the downtrodden.

The last ******* (the one who got us in this mess) made the Commissioner of police retract his statement saying that "our involvement in the invasion of Iraq would make us more likely to be attacked from within by the terrorists.

And that word TERRORIST has different conutations depending on which side of the fence you are sitting on. Do you not think that the ordinary citizen of Iraq who has just has his house and family blown up, as "collateral damage' by the USA , does he not know who the real terrorists are to him ?

The whole friggin thing makes me sick.

      From a cousin in Australia.....

Truer words have never been spoken.

This should be a world wide rule. If you want to move to any country and become part of that country...WELCOME, But if want to change anything in that new country you wish to live in ...GOODBYE

It took a lot of courage for this man to speak what he had to say for the world to hear. The retribution could be phenomenal, but at least he was willing to take a stand on his and Australia 's beliefs. Yes, allow those that want to come, to come. But understand that if you want to go to a country not of your birth, you should expect to live by their rules and respect their ways of life. This doesn't mean you have to give up yours. I think he explains it very well.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd - Australia

Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told on Wednesday to get out of Australia , as the government targeted radicals in a bid to head off potential terror attacks..

Separately, Rudd angered some Australian Muslims on Wednesday by saying he supported spy agencies monitoring the nation's mosques. Quote:

'IMMIGRANTS, NOT AUSTRALIANS, MUST ADAPT. Take It Or Leave It. I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Bali , we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Australians. '

'This culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom'

'We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society . Learn the language!'

'Most Australians believe in God. This is not some Christian, right wing, political push, but a fact, because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture.'

'We will accept your beliefs, and will not question why. All we ask is that you accept ours, and live in harmony and peaceful enjoyment with us.'

'This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian beliefs, or Our Way of Life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great Australian freedom, 'THE RIGHT TO LEAVE'.'

'If you aren't happy here then LEAVE. We didn't force you to come here. You asked to be here. So accept the country YOU accepted.'
'Never look down on a person unless you're helping them up'.

Don't know of any leader/politician who would have the liathrodis to say that in Ireland.

Thanks for that post Rashers.....My sentiments exactly....if you choose to emigrate from the country of your birth to another it behoves you to live alongside the inhabitants of that place NOT try to impose our customs/beliefs etc on them. I am sick to death of the powers that be being afraid - in the interest of political correctness - of telling immigrants you are in OUR country now. We respect your beliefs and we are entitled to the same courtesy.

We must understand one thing, no one leaves their country of birth if not forced to do so (unemployment, political refugees, invasion of his country by those who pretend democrats, I call them thieves and murderers: imposing their beliefs and ideas to people who ask nothing loving their ways of life so the oppressors must be good players and accept the results. lets see the conditions of life most of immigrant are living its not the eldorado.... so...there's a lot to say about this....

Khal, I do not object to any person coming into Ireland as long as they enter legally, respect the law and the customs and religion of the people living here already. I do resent the fact that unfortunately a minority group have caused problems over the past few years particularly at Christmas time in relation to the dispalying of the Crib in public areas. That is like saying to a Muslim that at Eid you cannot practice your customs in public! Don't think a Christian would get away with that in any Muslim country, do you???? You know I have lots of friends in a Muslim country and respect their customs and practices as indeed also Jewish friends and family but zealots in ANY relgion cause problems for the majority.

Well...this thread is something that ive battled with my conscience with for years....

We did things the legal way...we applied to emigrate to South Africa, Australia, and canada at the same time...Canada replied first and processed our application first..so here we are.....and believe me..those who emigrate know that its not something that just happens...its a long process and settling in is a long process..

BUT being legally here...we were able to get decent paying jobs...medical care..our kids could go to school...and we didnt have to live in fear of someone finding out or have to look over our shoulders all the time..

NOW over the years ive met people both here and in the states who are illegal...and the lives they live are nothing short of abuse...they are mistreated for the most part doing jobs no one wants to do for little or tiny paychecks...they cant open bank accounts..cant get medical care..and in one case were involved in some elaborate scam to get their kids to school...to live like this their previous lives in the countries of their births must have been terrible...I cant see anyone choosing to live like this unless absolutely necessary....and then living under the fear of being deported...jez...i couldnt do it.

I agree with what has been said. However, I will point out that the IRA - whether some lived in the UK at the time or came over especially - murdered innocents here. I am - I belive as patriotic as anyone on this site, but let us not forget Tim Parry and the other little fella in Warrington. I am just pointing this out lest we forget

But they (IRA) didn't go to the UK as immigrants.

Living not too far north of the Mexican border....sure, they come here because there's no jobs down there. Being an illegal in the U.S. is an improvement over no chance at a job.

But, is anyone else seeing this around the world? The new immigrants will not learn much English, and when they send their children to school here, there's the expense of hiring bilingual teachers & staff. It's like they are thumbing their nose up at us and saying we did not want to come here, so we will not change any more than we have to.
                            I believe in.......

Trish i took the oldest grandson to a party recently and was stunned when i got there to discover the grandparents on the fathers side, italians who'd lived in canada for 35 years didnt speak a word of english...they lived all their lives in an area with many italians and never felt the need to learn....and i see it too with older (my age) chinese people who maybe came here more than 25 years ago...) how they can even think of living in a place and not wanting to communicate is totally beyond me. Its totally laziness...cos we provide free english classes for immigrants..
