The only turf and coal merchant in Blackpitts as far as I remember was Mc Henry Bros.

Nearly sure it was in Newmarket jakey boy,I think they had pigs down there as they used to collect all the vegetable skins as well as deliver the coal.

My brothers and cousins would know a hell of a lot more than me about the area .. yo me it was just me Da's coal yard !
And a very fine Coal Merchants it was too.As said before our oul pad in Clanbrassiler backed onto that yard, and I can feel those "warm as toast" fires glowin inta me face as I write.Thank you Mr McHenry for all the free coal ye gev me Ma !!

If you enumerate the amounts and the regularity I'll send you an invoice ...... back dated for interest of course. The Da tells of kids running after the lorries when they were negotiating particularly difficult entrances into some of the depots ... one kid would climb up on top of the load and toss the turf down to his mates below. There was a young fellow that was killed when he slipped under the wheels once, terrible tragedy for his family.

An old neighbour had (or maybe still has) his garage in blackpitts. During a bus strike years and years ago, I used to get a lift home from him. I remember standing outside his garage waiting for the lift and the smell from some abbatoir there nearly making me sick. Probably why I'm now a vegetarian. I also remember getting sweets from some shop there and they put the sweets into a cone of paper.

I didn't think they were in blackpitts. We used to have to keep the windows closed in my school with the smell of O'Keefes. I haven't smelled that since and I hope I never do.

                          Bang Bang, lovely photo's.

If you go to Cabra - Glasnevin forum and open a new thread called say, Photos of Cabra or something, we can move the photo's to there.

The people of Blackpitts never mixed with the riff raff of Cabra, LOL.
