Rather than go off on any extensive and long winded analysis - I'll go with Joe on this one... for once.
      Everything is self-evident.

That's a good question nans'. Not having lived at home during his time in office, I'm interested in first hand views from those who did.

Ya, But how much of the prosperity of the Ninteys and early 2000's can be attributed to the attitude and actions of the likes of Haughey?

Not sayin it was right. Just bein Devils advocate here.
Ya he was corrupt. But the prosperity that you have to admit he helped establish was wasted by those who followed him. Granted he DID bring on those who followed him. lol

i see it as an aristocracy.....

their ignorance of the real world can only compare to an aristocratic outlook...

they get....no matter what the situation..........

like the aristocrats of old......they surround themselves with loyal followers......

as a child and growing teenager.....i only walked one path.....but that was a very observant pathway......

the aristocrats of old depended on loyalty to the king.....ireland replaced that with religion.......

like the french revolution........the end of a way of life, ended with chaos......

a mad rush to be better than everybody else.......

We will never know how far an alternative political party (to FF) would have progressed this country , for all we know , we could have went backwards . Haughey and the PDs did get us back on track in the late 80s ( with the support of FG ) economically wise . It was also very fortunate that three particular people were in power in the 90s , Clinton , Blair and Ahern that finally moved the peace process over the line .
Even a broken clock is right twice a day .
