''superiority'' was the height of fashion......
'The question of what is decent for women to wear in public has been a regular one in recent years. In New York yesterday, four women were parading 5th Avenue in the latest fashions, the slit skirt, known as the X-Ray skirt, and Belgian bloomers. Near 109th Street, they were surrounded by a group of angry men and women who felt the women were dressed indecently. They were told by the crowd to ‘sew them up’, and missiles were flung at them. The women ran away, but were chased by the crowd. When the women took refuge in a private house they were in a hysterical state. When the police arrived two of the women were arrested, but subsequently released as no crime had been committed.'
Sounds more like the Taliban than a 'very modern feeling' for some of the population in 1913...Everything is self-evident.
