  • Price rise of prescribed meds in chemist.

I've just came back from my local chemist after geting my meds at €1.50 an item. The pharmacist told me that they have received notification from the HSE that the cost is going up to €2.50 per item.

I can imagine those who get a lot of meds and cannot afford it skipping some to the detriment of their health or conditions.... or worse.

Here in england over 60's get Free Prescriptions. For those under 60 who need regular medication they can pay an annual fee which will cover the cost of their prescriptions.
However given the state of the Economy over here I bet someone in the government are thinking of re-introducing prescription fees.

I forgot to mention, I think the cost of a Prescription is about £7 over here.

If you are getting the same item but 2 different strengths you get charged double so it will be a fiver for the one drug

True. In my case I get a med which has 4 different strengths, same med, four items.... and for that one alone I pay 4 X €1.50. After the present budget that goes up to 4 X €2.50.

And in total I get 12 different items and once a month an extra two.

How long does your prescription last for? I picked up three prescriptions today, and they cost me $15 each for a 90 day supply. If I didn't have insurances, one from the Social security, for which I pay $120 per month, and the other from the Air Force, free, I can't imagine how much I would pay.I dont have to pay anything for my drs visits ,or medical procedures,MRIs ,colonoscopys, mammograms etc,so I consider myself very lucky indeed!

Some last a week some a month. If I'm a bit cash strapped I often miss some meds.

Jesus rashers....thats a recipe for disaster missing meds....our meds themselves here mostly arent very expensive so even if you didnt have insurance to cover the cost they wouldnt send you bankrupt buying them....pisses me off when i see things like rippo posted recently about the labour party wanting to make ireland smoke free......when they should be concentrating on keeping people in good health.....and not risking losing the taxes they collect on tobacco products...cos thats going to roll down on the regular joe soap.....whos going to end up paying the shortfall........and those who are sick in the population often suffer more.

Jim, Can you not ask your Doctor to Double the amount of your prescription. Say from 28 tabs to 56 tabs . The same applies to any inhalers you may have to take.
It shouldn't cost him anything for increasing the amount of medication that he prescribes for you.
It can't hurt to ask him.

                  Thanks MKM and mickjoe.

I asked my doc to help me but she's a woman that sometimes reminds me of oul Thatcher.

To give you an idea. Everyone with my complaint and with diabetes is entitled to a benefit so that you can afford the correct foods. I got the application form and asked her to sign it and she refused. She told me I'm not on a special diet! Yet she had put me on a special diet for diabetes herself!

I reminded her of that but she shrugged it off.

So I get none of that benefit.

I asked her to review my meds as they are quite expensive when I get to the pharmacy. She held up a prescription and told me the price to each item from the pharmaceutical firms, and then she totted up the whole lot and told me I was doing well as the meds cost the exchequer in excess of €600 a month.

I think she's a reincarnation of Maggie Thatcher.
