  • was this usual...

my mams family name was jacobs.......

it was changed from james to jacobs, when as far as i can work out...my great grandfather married a catholic girl.....i am not sure if he changed his religion, but i believe the children were brought up as catholics.....

would this practice have been usual in those days....?

i believe my grandfather married a protestant girl from belfast...but, my mam was brought up as a catholic...

Is what usual, the name change or bring the kids up catholic? I don't know about the name change but the latter was the norm even when I was getting married.

      thanks boxman....

if he changed to a catholic...would he have felt he needed to change his name.......james to jacobs...is not really much of a change...

i am not sure of the reasons.....he was serving in the munster fusiliers at the time....

i have also heard he was a quaker....being in the army seems to go against that....but he was, as was his son ..a bandsman...and in action they would have only been stretcher bearers...

Why would "Jacobs" be any more Catholic than "James"? If he did change it, I would imagine it was for another reason.....can't think what though. As for bringing the kids up Catholic, I think as Boxman said that was standard practice even up to the 80s, if they were getting married in a Catholic Church I think they had to promise to bring the kids up as Catholics - I might be wrong there. Not sure what the situation is now.

my mam was brought up as a catholic.....i am thinking that my grandfathers two sisters were not catholics....and my grandfather was not a practicing catholic....it is all very mixed up.....

Is Jacobs just a different form of James as in Jacobite - supporting King James?

Well, I think "Jacobus" would have been Latin for James as a first name, and baptisms were usually registered with Latin first names......don't think it applied to surnames though........

I don't think James is a particularly Irish or Catholic name, is it? And the biscuit people weren't Catholics were they?
