There was a march in town today in support of the Irish language and the perception that the government are not doing enough to promote it.

A woman was interviewed and her complaint centred around her 3 year old child. She said that the child only spoke Irish and didn't understand English. She gave an example that, when the child was brought to the doctor, who only spoke English, a proper diagnosis couldn't be made because the child didn't understand the doctor.

Now - am I missing something here or is this woman a stupid gobshite...?

I mean - imagine bringing up a child (by 2 bilingual parents) to only speak Irish. What is this woman trying to prove?....and how will it restrict the poor child in the future?.....and also, when the doctor was checking the child, were the parents not present to translate?.

It's costing us all a fortune to have everything translated into Irish to appease this extremist pro-Irish language minority (by some way)....and it really isn't necessary because they all speak English anyway (except poor sick Robin).

Maybe all of the realists should go down to Galway and clog up their streets for a change next week and tell them all to fuck off.......!!

The argument about a doctor being unable to treat a small boy because his parents did not teach him English is completely bogus. Our local vet can treat my dog who can only bark.

Multilingualism is the key. I watch TV in English, French, German and Irish. I speak French to my suppliers. I speak English, French and German to my clients and Spanish to my neighbour. My GPS is in Irish, just for the craic. I think that it is wrong to restrict our children to a single language, whether that one language is Irish or English makes no difference. Somewhere along the line Irish people have been thought to hate their own language and culture, I don't understand that. As a nation we are so filled with self-loathing that in the absence of an oppressor hating us for being who we are that we do it ourselves.

Whether we like it or not, English is by far our first language and, at this stage, there should be a second language choice in schools.

How many of us use Irish?........very few - yet we were all obliged to spend a third of our primary education time learning the language.....meanwhile, our EC counterparts were learning English, German and French.
