  • The changing church

My grandson was christened last weekend in the catholic church in
Ringsend, now i don't have any religion but i went along to the sermon
with an open mind. The Priest greeted us and told us we were very
welcome to the church,he told us that we could take as many photos
as we wanted as it would not bother him.He told us the history of the
oils he was using and added a bit of humour with a few stories that
were funny,so it was very relaxing and i left with a happier feeling
about the church than i had before i went in.All Because of the attitude
of the priest. In a few weeks time i will have another grandchild christened
in Tallaght and already there are warning signals that all is not going to
be the same, the priest told the parents they will not be able to carry
the child into the church as it is the duty of the godparents to carry
the child as on that day the child belongs to the church not the parents.
He also said that if he sees a camera in the church he will stop the
Christening and will not start until the person puts the camera away
It should be great fun with a stupid bollix like that,i can see my short
lived love for the church ending on that day.

I think belief in the supernatural is a dead end.

That's two ways of looking at "Customer Services". I thought they were trying to get people back to the church and not drive them away. The one in Tallagh sounds a right Pri-k. On the other hand, the first priest you mentioned is probably a one off.
I google because I'm not young enough to know everything.

Rasher, it's very vexing dealing with one parish to the next. When my daughter was born my parish priest wouldn't baptize her unless my husband converted - which there was no way in hell he would do that! (that's the nice version - the priest was so horrid to me that I went home crying and refused to ever go back!) We moved when she was one. About a year later I walked into a church with my little heathens and they were running wild. I was trying to catch them when the priest walked in and told me to let them run. It was God's house and a house should be filled with happy sounds. So I spent the next hour or so telling him everything I thought was wrong with the church and even mentioned the nasty priest who refused to baptize my daughter. He said he'd do it and two weeks later a mob descended upon his church for the best baptism I've ever been too. (we still laugh about it because of his accent - he was Italian and it made it very entertaining)
Five years ago two of my grandsons were baptized in a church in Oklahoma. I was horrified!! We could take pictures and basically do whatever we wanted but the idiot who baptized them spent a good portion of the service talking about sex!! My daughter in-law's family is not Catholic! They had no idea this was NOT normal!! So at the end of the day I believe there's no consistency in the church and it all depends on the priest. Is he a decent man or is he a bollocks? Luck of the draw...
