so, after the Germans, danes, Norwegians, swedes and no doubt quite a few old Dutchmen......had beaten the shoite out of each other for centuries........

Along came the French......though not strictly speaking ....''FRENCH'' ....MORMANS (NORTHMEN).....they spoke and behaved like the ''FRENCH''.......and lived in NORMANDY......
of course the ones from BRITTANY would have been related to the ANCIENT BRITONS..(like the Cornish people are)).......

Well, said the brave bill (not yet known as the conqueror).......me and the pope have had a little chat........

that Harold needs sorting out......I am the rightful king of angleland.......I will go there......and as soon as Harold beats the shoite out of those Scandanavians I will beat the shoite out of his footsore army .....

          yes, Angleland will be mine......

            Just to sum up......

the ancient Britons, the celtic tribes.......

a few still lived in Cornwall.......(a wild country)

a few still lived in Wales (meaning wild country))

quite a few still lived in Scotland........(one helluva wild country)

and thanks to the Roman emigration policy (''stay and die'').......many had moved to Ireland......

Now, William claimed the right to rule the lot of them......GERMANS, DANES, SWEDES, NORWEGIANS, DUTCH, and a few well used to foreign invasions disgruntled ancient BRITONS......

Though Ireland, had with the help of the Vikings invaded angleland a few times in the previous couple of hundred years.....they were not mentioned at this stage.....

              so where are we.....

YES, ..1066........1066........1066....it has a nice ring to it......

THE BATTLE OF HASTINGS......though it did not take place in Hastings....again it has a nice ring to it......

Bill..........became WILLAM the CONQUEROR.......most of the women in Normandy made him the worlds longest scarf in celebration........

Now, was that a bad thing....?

He brought with him the best craftsmen in Europe......stonemasons, woodcarvers, metalworkers, they would build magnificent churches and castles, but he also brought with him.......wait for it...................................yes, THE FECKING ARISTOCRACY......

Loyal families who had fought and distinguished themselves in battle...and must be rewarded.........

Though the Pope had given William the nod to become the King of angleland.....It was BILL who gave the aristocracy the nod........''this land is yours'' go and take it.......

So, after a movie making amount of killing, raping, burning, and pillaging (an amount that Vikings had only dreamed of).....Angleland was subdued. BILL took the biggest share and the rest was divided out among the new ''English aristocry''

All those anglo Saxons with the nice descriptive names like, smith, wright, slater, thatcher, butcher, baxter (a lady butcher) carpenter, etc etc.......were now Lorded over by a load of people with strange French names......

Though, many of those name have been anglicised since.

Now we have come to the ''them and us''......do what you are told ''or else''

At last England had arrived on this earth.....

Despite all the devastation, the decimated population, the burned crops, England was here to stay......

The FRENCH had made a new united country......no more Danegeld (Harold Bluetooth would have to wait for the invention of the mobile phone) NO MORE VIKING, or combined IRISH/VIKING invasions. The Aristocry set about ruling the new country, And they did with great success.....

The once numerous, but now not so numerous peasants. Became the new English serfs. Ruled by a French speaking King and administered by a French speaking aristocracy.

What land and wealth the aristocrats got, they intended to keep it.

You also skipped the fact that he Normans were originally Vikings (my ex-husband told me this, don't know if it's true, but might explain why they were called the Northmen)......and that in addition to fighting the Normans, Harold had to contend with Harald Hardrada, the King of Norway....in fact it appears that because of his skirmish with Harald in 1066, Harold's troops were pretty knackered when it came to dealing with William's forces down in Sussex.....his troops, btw, arrived at Pevensey Bay and the Battle of Hastings was fought at Battle.

and the footsore Saxons...it's a long way from Stamford bridge to the south coast.....

just for the record......a battle referred to a unit of fighting men......not to the actual fighting.....hence the word...battalion....

the Normans trump card would have been the mounted knights......horses and water or soggy ground do not mix......

Venice is an example of that......to get away from the HUNS.....The people built a town out in the lagoon......

the called it VENE VICE......or something like that, it means... WE CAME (to escape the Hun horsemen ...WE STAYED.........
