  • What are your political beliefs?

I'm first and foremost a democrat, I believe in the people electing their government. I'm a republican in that I believe a citizen of the State should be Head of State not a monarch. I support the Austalian Republican Movement and the Australian Labor Party. I used to believe in Socialism but don't anymore.

I joined the ITGWU at 15 and was a shop steward for a while. I was always a union member until I came to Australia.

hi i'm probably the original floating voter .when i lived in ireland i voted fianna fail 1977 . never again after that voted fg labour wp .and tony gregory in early 80s . since i moved to uk i normally vote lib dem or labour in general elections .but have been known to vote tory in local ones .labour councils can be very costly to the pocket here .

Although a democrat and nationalist I have never voted for any of the established parties, always for an independent who has a good reputation for looking after his constituency.

I'm a pissed off voter...hate to vote for any of them..but this time

labour had to go but survived..labour didn't in Victoria..after 11yrs,

                enough was enough.

I will vote for someone who really represents the people..& there is no such

person or party...so the idea of voting for a party because i always do,

appals me...I owe them no loyalty.
today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday.

As a socialist all my life, I have to disagree with you boxie - people cannot be put into 'boxes' - you get shite workers from all walks of life, political leanings etc

The current government here has 22 millionaires in it - all inherited wealth. I bet not one of them ever wallpapered a room in their lives, or set a coial fire or dug a garden or cleaned out a blocked drain or took a bus to work, came home cooked a dinner, cleaned the house, did a basketful ofg ironing etc

Most of us do ( certainly did as does himself still) and go and do a full days honest work that makes someone else very rich whilst on average or just above average wages

My old man, now long dead would have been a millionaire ...... he did not inherit his wealth but built it up from the age of 18 AND he wallpapered many a room, not only lit many many coal fires but he personally delivered the shaggen coal and turf as well to a multitude of Dublin Corporation buildings, Dug and re dug the garden many times and took great pride in the produce he planted, nurtured and reaped, unblocked the sewers on at least three occasions that I can remember, don't believe he ever took a bus or cooked a dinner or any other household chores though ! He was not a socialist nor did he ever go into politics although he did a huge amount of work for Fianna Fail from 1933 until about 1960. He was as honest as the day was long and assisted a number of his employees to start their own businesses both large and small.

So as Red Biddy says ..".people cannot be put into 'boxes" ... each one of us is different. and yes he fought the unions over a number of issues including the "ghost herders" on the cattle boats to England to name but one !

I'm not talking about people at all, I'm talking about the system. I used to think that a pure socialist system would be the way to go, but in practice it has proven in most cases to be unworkable in a practical sense. China would never be where it is today had it followed the same path as the USSR. It was the introduction of a freer market based economy by Deng the led China to where it is today - the most dynamic economy on the planet.

If you were working on a communal farm in Russia producing the required quota of potatoes, nobody gave a fuck about how good they were because there was no free market to compete with what you produced. The bloke that tried to do his best, fulfilled his quoted just the same as the bloke who produced shite product. The same goes for cars etc. The reason the Soviet block produced shite products (except for military stuff of course) was that there was no competition.

why..oh why do we continue to put up with mediocresy....

I believe in social justice...people plodding away & recognizing the humanity

in each other...if enough did that we'd be half way there....I feel.
