Was not sure which thread to post this but here you go:

    Got this from a friend.

Ireland's new free-to-air digital television service, SAORVIEW, has launched a public information campaign to highlight the greater choice, better quality pictures and sound which will be available to homes across the country from this summer.
    *
The SAORVIEW service will be launched at the end of May
    *
Members of the public can now obtain information on the new service from www.saorview.ie and Lo Call 1890 222012, and an advertising campaign is also underway across television, radio and online.
All viewers who currently receive their television signal through an aerial will need to switch to SAORVIEW by the end of 2012, as analogue television transmission will be switched off throughout the EU at that time.

Other television viewers are also expected to take up the service which involves the once-off purchase of a set-top box which allows viewers receive the digital SAORVIEW service free into the future.

Mary Curtis, Director of Digital Switch Over, RTÉ, said: "This is an exciting time for TV viewers. The new digital service offers more choice when it comes to TV channels and radio channels and it also offers higher quality pictures and sound. Most importantly SAORVIEW offers this new service on a free-to-air basis, which means that there is no monthly cost to consumers. To receive SAORVIEW viewers will need to purchase a set-top box, but after that there is no charge.

"This public information campaign will explain how people can easily make the switch to the new SAORVIEW service and enjoy the benefits of free digital television. The SAORVIEW service will be launched at the end of May this year."

The planned channel line-up for the new SAORVIEW digital television platform, which was announced last month, is as follows: RTÉ One, RTÉ Two HD, TV3, TG4, RTÉ News Now, 3e, RTÉjr, RTÉ One + 1 and RTÉ Digital Aertel.

The following radio services will also be available on SAORVIEW: RTÉ Radio 1, RTÉ 2fm, RTÉ lyric fm, RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta, RTÉ Choice, RTÉ Pulse, RTÉ 2XM, RTÉ Gold, RTÉ Chill, RTÉJnr, and Radio 1 Extra.

For what it's worth my experiences here in Brisbane with digital TV (now compulsory) is not being able to get two of the major stations at the same time (one or the other), broken signals particularly when it rains, jumping picture when aircraft fly over ...... in other words complete crap !!

Oh yes ... they say it can be fixed for $800 !!! free to air my arse !

In general, my digital experience has been mixed. Sometimes I get a lot of pixelation on my screen making it impossible to view the programme which breaks up. I then have to switch to the mono signal to get a decent pic. This happens on some freeview stations regularly.

Analogue tv to end in oct 2012

Got the latest announcement by email:

It*has been announced that the analogue television network in Ireland is to be switched off in just over a year's time.
            *
*The new national digital television network, Saorview, replaces the analogue service

The new national digital television network, Saorview, replaces the analogue service when it is switched off on October 24 2012.
If households that currently receive their television signal via an aerial do not switch to digital they will lose Irish television services when the analogue network is switched off.

Minister for Communications Pat Rabbitte announced the date, which is the same as Northern Ireland.

The minister said the move to digital is a positive one that will offer viewers clearer picture and better sound quality.

He said it would also offer more channels and free up space on the broadcast spectrum for other purposes, including mobile and broadband services.

Around 250,000 households currently rely on analogue to watch TV.

An awareness campaign about the switchover is to get under way next week.

For more information about Saorview go to: www.saorview.ie, Aertel page 650 or lo call 1890-222012.

Mary Curtis, RTÉ's Director of Digital Switchover, said: "The SAORVIEW channel and service line-up announced today by Minister Carey represents great news for Irish television viewers.

"For the approximately 340,000 households who currently receive just the four main free-to-air TV channels this represents a significant increase in choice.

"The SAORVIEW service will be launched at the end of May this year. We will be beginning a comprehensive public information campaign in mid March to explain how people can easily make the switch to the new SAORVIEW service and enjoy the benefits of Irish free-to-air digital television long into the future.

If you pay for the new airels and set up ( A$800 ) you get the stations ....BUT be prepared for the picture and sound to break up occasionally, especially during wet weather (do you get any wet weather in Ireland ?) and when aircraft fly over (does any planes fly over Dublin ?) ... then you get a pletoria of absolute crap from America ... "reality TV" , numerous inane American panel shows all shouting in yer face and like shite.

It's the multi-nationals taking over your airwaves !!
