  • Eire and the Catholic Church

It is said that Daniel O'Connell strengthened the link between the Catholic Church and the Irish people as the basis of Irish nationalism.

But what happened after the creation of Eire and Mr de Valera's Constitution of Ireland ?

Would it be to simplistic to say ' fear ' , and what all that ever entails .

The people chose to embrace that religion when they grew up.....

The Church was well aware of what it could ''get away with''...there would be no questions asked of these ''good people''.......

The Pope could get them out of trouble...

Indeed, that had a lot to do with the excessive stranglehold this religious mafia had over the population....a population that was nearly as much hypocritical as it was religious.

The underhand manner in which archaic practices such as 'churching' were encouraged and practiced, is an insight into an organisation that would stop at nothing to control it's flock.

As TP Coogan put it in his bestselling book Ireland Since The Rising,
Guilt and sex were, for example, conjoined in the infamous custom of 'churching', which was once widespread amongst Irish women who had had children.

Before receiving Holy Communion, women who had recently given birth had to be purified of the stain of sexuality associated with childbirth.

Churching was ubiquitous until the 1960s in Ireland; after this point, the influence of Vatican II caused it to fall largely, though not wholly, out of use.

Church teaching on contraception and abortion, meanwhile, was - and to a degree, one could argue, still is - responsible for a set of outcomes which were as cruel as they were hypocritical.

Catholic teaching forbade the use of artificial forms of contraception, and the general scarcity and unavailability of contraceptives in Ireland until the 1970s was directly responsible for a diverse range of social scandals.
And all the while, as has been said in here many times....acts of gross indecency against the innocents was commonplace.

While in the extreme beasts such as Bishop Eamon Casey and Michael Cleary (the singing priest is right) and other social monsters of the cloth could take advantage of young girls, and in the instance of Bishop Casey, a relation.....and get away with it for decades.

There is documented evidence to this day sitting in the archives of Trinity College Dublin proof that Archbishop J C J McQuaid had paedophile tendencies.

Been reading a bit online about Noel Browne's proposed "Mother and Child Scheme" but all I can glean from what I've read so far was that the proposed legislation was designed to improve medical care for children and thus reduce child mortality, and that it was opposed by the Church which led to Browne's resignation. What exactly were the Church objecting to and on what grounds?
