Sorry, but that's the kind of thing that lets me know you know nothing of the Masons.

Don't like Opus Dei, think they are a dangerous society. But the rest of your argument comes from conspiracy theory land.
Opus Dei - it is believed they try to be a church within a church which does not really affect me as I am fed up with religeon but they are quite secretive as are the Masons. I wonder what all the secrecy is about? Is it a power thing? Do they influence (as has been claimed) areas of our lives that they should not - policing, certain politicians etc

It is a commen belief here that the Masons are a secret society and no one really knows what they do or stand for. They purport to be a charitible organisation but no one really knows what they actually do except wield power and are a bit of a law to themselves. It is known that they look after each other at any cost

Opus Dei I can't speak for. But I can for Masons.

Yes the Masons have conducted their meetings in secret for thousands of years (yes they are that old -- claiming their origins to the building of the Pyramids), and has anone ever heard of them harming anyone?

They are a charitable organisation, but remember what it says in the bible about almsgiving should be secret? Well it is.

The old story that they 'look after' each other is a fallacy where people believe an accused can give a judge a secret sign that gets him off.. for instance. If such 'secret' signs worked every criminal woth his salt would be using them.

As well as that, being a Mason didn't do John Stalker much good... an honest policeman who was set up by the system in the UK to investigate if there was a Shoot to kill policy being pursued in Northern Ireland, and as he discovered the truth was forced to resign after his name was dragged through the mud by the same people who sent him on the investigation -- he and many who wrecked his career being Masons. Read hs book, The Stalker Affair. A great and eye opening read if you want to learn something of dirty tricks in the UK system.

Do they look after each other as in if one is out of work the others might be able to find him a job? Naturally. Doesn't all organisations?

The big thing that seems to bother people is the apparent secrecy? It's not so secret when you can get it all on Google.

Remember the Square Dealers in Coronation Street where the young butcher is one now? That was a series the producers done on Masonry and explained it all very well.

If you Google for secret societies you'll get a long list.... Masons being just one.

Your a good person but until someone proves to me that these secret organisations have no axe to grind and dont actually explain in public their end means, I remain an ould sceptic

Thank you.

Ever see or feel the result of any axe they're grinding? (they really aren't doing anything that would shock or frighten you) And there's no way the Masons are going to go on television to tell everyone what they do... that's left to imaginations. Quite like the inner workings of the Vatican and other major world religions.

I mention religions because people say the Masons are a religion. They aren't. You will find Christians, Jews, all denominations. In fact you must believe in god to be a mason.

And I bet if you ask a priest/vicar etc about certain matters they'll come out with the old explanation, "We don't need to know that. It's a mystery."

Whats sauce for the goose etc?

Have a read up on them Liz and you'll be surprised. I could give you some links but then like those who couldn't write a post without a link, the ones I'd supply would be biased in favour.

You won't find anything written by the founders -- they died thousands of years ago.
