"Ireland has become a small net contributor to the EU Budget for the first time since it joined the bloc in 1973.

In 2014, the last year for which complete data is available, the country paid €168m more to the EU than it received in grants and payments.

That's according to briefing material provided to Finance Minister Michael Noonan by officials in his department.

The note states that in 2014, Ireland contributed around €1.69bn to the EU Budget, and received €1.52bn in return.

"Ireland has been a significant net beneficiary from the EU Budget since accession in 1973," the briefing material states.

"However, 2014 represented the first time that Ireland was a (small) net contributor."

For example......Giving away ten pounds and getting two pounds back does not mean you are getting a handout......It means you a giving ''handouts''...It is very strange how ''Facts'' seem to get distorted or ignored when discussing EU economics......

That's what being part of a community is all about, the more able or affluent members helping the less fortunate until the less fortunate become better off. I think it's nice.

But surely there has to be a part of you that thinks and feels good about helping people in less favourable circumstances than you .......there just has to be .

Yes, I really want the UK tax-take to be spent on those in need (and there are many) in the UK..... I have no doubt you will support me in hoping that takes place..I also hope that we in the UK will do as we always have done, help those in the ''third-world....

If you feel otherwise I will be very sad and shocked.....

Yes it is.....So the ''Richer Ireland'' should have being giving rather than taking......

So should the richer Moselle Valley Vine growers...But sadly yourself and some others on here think different........

I am proud to be a socialist........
