And, most of the bad guys seem to operate just in the North? Damn, some of those neighborhoods must be the pits up there.
There is also another otfit known as INLA. The list is endless.

Some of these IRA groups seem like gangs to me in the 21st century....like the Bloods, the Crips, etc. Like certain groups of them commit gang-banging-like activities like attacking another group or person of a different religion, car bombings, etc. So, I wonder what sorts join these 'groups'?

Only here they would consider themselves to be patriotic.... working towards ending British occupation of our six north eastern counties.

What sort join? Pick any group of people and you'll find representatives in the IRA and similar movements.

When the Brits finally lost the 13 colonies, my ancestors were sort of like terrorists getting rid of the original government, ya think? Gee, how did they ever pull that off?

More like Black Panthers or Aryan Nations - claiming to politically represent specific ethnic groups, but involving themselves with criminal activities as well.

Exactly! Like Black Panthers / Aryan Nations in US masquerading as political voice for Black / White Americans

Nothing to do with ethnic groups... all to do with Republicism and Unionism. The Republicans would also tell you it has to do with British military occupation.

No, they were only interested in what was happening in Ireland and sent money to buy weapons.

They also famously invaded Canada, but I think they only managed to burn down a pub before making a strategic withdrawl back to the US.
