Some of these IRA groups seem like gangs to me in the 21st century....like the Bloods, the Crips, etc. Like certain groups of them commit gang-banging-like activities like attacking another group or person of a different religion, car bombings, etc. So, I wonder what sorts join these 'groups'?

Only here they would consider themselves to be patriotic.... working towards ending British occupation of our six north eastern counties.

What sort join? Pick any group of people and you'll find representatives in the IRA and similar movements.

More like Black Panthers or Aryan Nations - claiming to politically represent specific ethnic groups, but involving themselves with criminal activities as well.
