  • A fair bit ....

On radio stations this morning about children going to do their State exams , all information in regards how to approach them , eating .... sleep .... mental health .

Is there direct / indirect pressure being placed on their shoulders ......... for those of them who wish to carry on to 3rd level , it's not the end of the world for them if they don't attain the points they need , they can repeat if necessary [ understandably they'd prefer not to have to ] .

Heard on morning TV, some mother said that the noise from her opening a packet of crisps was too noisy for her child , who was trying to study for her leaving cert ,

I think there is too much pressure Twobob. They are still only teenagers and while a degree is necessary for many jobs, there are lots of jobs you can get without it. I was watching today recently and Lorraine Keane who used to do AA road watch and somebody else well known whose name I don't recall, both said they did not get sufficient points to do their chosen courses. They went to DIT and did something else and did well out of it. She was offered the job with the AA and loved it, she was delighted that her life went the way it did.

I didn’t do my leaving cert until I was 37 and I wasn’t looking for a job then, I was working as a panel Beater since I was 13 and made a good living from it. I just done my leaving cert for a bit of crack,no pressure

I studied eight subjects for my Leaving, which looking back now was outrageous. I was not going to college but there was still a lot of pressure, some of it was from the school, more of it was the competition in the neighbourhood between parents, whose little Johnny got the most honours

I never went secondary as you had to pay then. It was nearly 10 years later that O'Malley brought in free secondary.
I went to vocational school & did what was colloquially known as the group cert.
I did 9 subjects & got 8 honours but only a pass in art.
I was still 15 when I started serving my time in the ESB.

I got five honours and the rest were pass papers. Many years later as an adult I did a degree in TCD and it was a lot easier than studying for the Leaving
