Lol, when the teenagers would book for the Sunday shows, he would keep them all in order, banning them if they were really out of line! The teenagers used to hang around the shops in the evenings, never caused any trouble, just a few ciggies. Then the policeman from the village, a big Culchie, they called"saddle up" used to come by and run them all off home! My sister Betty used to write down the words of all the latest songs for some of them. What innocent times those were! Does anyone remember Nellie Hyden? She used to sell newspapers in Finglas, and sailor! Or Martha and Marie Doyle from mellows rd?
I remember a paper woman who lived in Finglas. She used to sell outside the pub on the corner of Marlborough St.I would see her sometimes on the bus heading home, she would be the worst for drink, refused to pay her fare. Most times the conductor would leave her be but on at least one occasion the guards were called and she was removed from the bus,God love her.I knew a girl named Evelyn Gibbons who lived on Mellowes Rd,she worked in Unidare as I did myself.Remember Collins fruit and veg shop? A John Whelan worked there, first as messenger boy, then he went out on the truck delivering coal and finally he managed the shop.He parted ways with Mr Collins in the 70s but is still living in Finglas.

      • I remember Jimmy the vegetable man in his little van, my Mam would buy one orange, all she could afford, and cut it between us four kids. I remember "the galloping baker" as we called him, he was always running, he drove a huge brown van, he probably was running in case anyone nicked his buns while he was delivering! Lol. Johnson mooney and o' briens came up there and bolands. And the Merville dairy cart, the man next door to us worked for May Roberts, what did they sell? There was a laundry man too, but I forget the name, not the swastika!lol. There was a Ragman who used to push a handcart, my aunt in Crumlin and my Ma would send messages via him, talk about snail mail!

        • Jimmy would give my baby brother a lift in his van. My mother was often complaining that his spuds were too small - "like marbles", she said.
