  • Green Muscle Disease

I had never heard of this disease until yesterday. It's a disease that chickens get in particular the chickens/broilers that are reared specifically for meat production.
We had visitors over the weekend and we went out for dinner last night. One of our guests ordered a chicken dish. She had eaten two mouthfuls of the chicken breast, before noticing the chicken meat was green. The waitress took the dish away immediately and the manager apologised and offered to replace the meal. He said he did not know why the chicken was green but was still able to assured us it was not harmful.
After making further inquiries we discovered that restaurants know exactly what it.

Deep pectoral myopathy (DPM) is a degenerative muscle disease of heavy chickens and turkeys commonly referred to as 'Green Muscle Disease'. Mississippi State University Extension Service explains the

I won't be eating chicken in a restaurant again....

USA Farming methods are different than the EU. They use minimal treated human waste water to irrigate in the States which means your asking for trouble with ecoli.

                Harmless apparently....

...The lesion does not impair the general health of the chickens and is generally found during cut-up and deboning. The condition is not associated with any infectious or harmful substance and has no food safety concern other than affecting the aesthetic appearance of the meat.
                Everything is self-evident.

I'm not usually one to bang the vegetarian drum, but from what I've read the chickens get this because they're "flapping their wings too much" - probably because they're kept in cramped conditions. And as Cogs' article shows, the green thing is not harmful to humans.

Don't know Katie...the colour green would indicate to me that there was an infection of some kind in that general area at some stage. The poultry industry are not going to tell us it's harmful. I will never eat chicken again ....actually I'm seriously thinking of giving up all kinds of meat...for good.
