  • Deaths in Indonesian Election Polls

    This is crazy:
Scores of election workers have died, mostly of fatigue-related illnesses, an official says.

The story is confusing because in a non BBC version I read last week it was including police and party workers out canvassing. Might be one of those claims that ran away from the official.

Various sources say it's a combination of police and "election workers"......I'm not up to speed on Indonesia's human rights record but surely this is unacceptable - if it was a terrorist attack or a natural disaster there'd be much more coverage - we seem to accept this sort of violation as par for the course in such countries..........

800000 polling stations(UK has around 50k), 5 million election workers and 400k police and army involved. The temps this time of year are in late 20oC to early 30oc with high humidity. The vote day was a combo of the presidential election and legislative elections. So voting dragged longer than normal.

The counting of the legislative vote is still ongoing so is the death count spread from the voting date of the 17th April to now? Or just on the date of the vote? Or the start of the campaign? The official campaign kicked off in September 2018. Then you have what?17000 Islands to ferry the ballot boxes to & from the count centres.

Might be worth the guys on that BBC Radio 4 statistics show to have a look at, to see if the figure is as bad as it sounds when you take out the daily morbidity rate, the length of the count and the sheer number of officials involved. The real figure could be high but not as attention grabbing as 200 odd,

Even so, it can't be right to have people dying like that in the course of doing their job.......not in the 21st century. It's like the Lancashire mills in the early 19th century.
