In his role as Minister for Finance during the calamitous period when this country's fortunes went into nosedive, Lenihan was criticised for some of the momentous decisions he made, especially in relation to the failed Irish banks.
For all of that, after listening to the many tributes paid to him today it's apparent that Lenihan was an intelligent and likeable man who was put in a difficult and unenviable position and acted in what he believed was the best interests for his country - unlike some of the personalities that featured in that era.
A sad time for his family and friends and a public loss too. RIP.
