  • memories/ smells of my youth in the dublin 50/60s

excuse me for butting in, I am a newcomer to the forum. in 1945 I was born in Thomas st. and for the first 8yrs of my life I spent playing all around the liberties. from the age of 4 till 8 I attended st catherines school in meath st and at lunch time I would run across the road to get my free bowl of stew. this establishment was known as the little flower, while there I would sit around the same table as the well known caractures like, bang-bang, jonny40 coats, mary ellen who did sell her fish from an old pram with a bakery tray on her pram displaying her goods she would always be seen at the corner of meath st and Thomas st. on a hot sunny day we would go to her for a piece of ice, just the taught of it now, I can almost smell and taste the fish. I miss the sound of johns lane church bells, and powers disterely and of course okeeffes the tanners up catherines lane and the best smell of all the Guinness brewery. if I could have one wish, I would wish to be that little snotty nose kid again. regards dunwack.

Hi Dunwach....you are not butting in....welcome to the forum .... its good so have new members telling stories of yesteryear. While I'm not from that area I too would not mind being a little kid again. Life was so carefree and wonderful back in the fifties and sixties....though not without its problems..
        It is what it is.

memories of the real dublin folk

hi pammy, I remember sunday mornings my sisters and myself would down bridgefoot street hill to the flats where an old man or old woman was sitting by the gate selling winkles for a penny a packet. then we would our way back up and sit on the doorstep outside our tenement house, armed with a pin we would spend the next hour or two pinning every last piece of winkle from each shell. that was one of our weekly treets another treet was after school we would go to the bano in the flats for a curren bun and a cup of tea and on Saturday it was down to the Tivoli in francis street to see filme like flash gorden, roy rogers, gene autry, ect, ect. wow I could go on for ever. gee I love this forum. regards dunwack

                    just fond memories.

going home from school in meath st, I and my pals would cross the road into hanbury lane and then into seezers lane where there was two slaughter houseswe would stand at the open door to watch the men bring in the cattle, we were allowed to watch the complete process of the shooting and all they do till the cow was hanging, gutted and skinned and all ready for the butchers shop. I have to say it was not a pleasant smell, but very enteraining. bye for now regards dunwack.

The smell that sticks out the most for me was in the garden of my da,s aunt and uncle down in co meath near Drogheda.I can still remember the incredible smells of all the flowers and fruit trees in that garden. My da was a great gardener with all the same stuff in the garden but for some reason it did not smell the same.Maybe it was the country air lol.

I worked for CJ Cremen MPSI of Meath St and remember watching the cattle being slaughtered in Seezers Lane.
I google because I'm not young enough to know everything.

What I always remember about Dublin aromas is when I would walk by the Kylemore bakery with my dear old Ma, and inhale the wonderful smells of all the beautiful cakes. Also the incredible smell as I walked by the greengrocers on Errigal Rd,where they always had the fruit in boxes outside the shop windows. It has always stuck in my mind.I don't think they could do that today.
