The recipe for world peace is simple ..... countries agree not to interfere in each others affairs.
The Taliban don't interfere in what we to do in Ireland .... and we shouldn't interfere in what they do in Talibanland...... unless we want World War III."Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, misdiagnosing it, and then misapplying the wrong remedies.”

Bin Laden's Cat
War has been declared on sin.
It’s a pretty amorphous concept
on which to declare war,
but there you have it.
We won’t be using a sledge-hammer
to crush a nut
We’ll be using nuclear weapons
to splatter a gnat.
Maybe we’ll miss, but what of that?
we’re sure to kill Bin laden's cat.

Yes... well... the OP briefly explained the background to sophistry or sophism... and also asked a question...
I'm wondering if, in the internet era - and in forums in particular - whether sophism is set to re-emerge as a life skill to be developed - ??
Is this a valid - and moral - method of discourse ?Everything is self-evident.

The Sophists believed the key to any argument or discussion - and they were very competitive - was to expose the contradictions in the other person's argument - and thus win...

has on their social standing or bank balance. Having said that, there's a place
for playing "Devil's Advocate", ie putting forward a point of view that isn't necessarily one's own, in order to stimulate debate and broaden the discussion......to enhance the quality of the debate, not for the pecuniary purposes of a sophist or the self-aggrandisement of his employer - paying someone else to argue for you is just lazy. There's a difference between paying a lawyer to argue your case and employing a sophist to articulate your
arguments in a political or ethical discussion.

The only notable female philosopher in ancient times was Hypatia of Alexandria - women were not encouraged and in many cases forbidden from taking up mathematics, science and philosophy... by all accounts she was a remarkable woman - famous for her beauty and wisdom. Christianity had recently arrived in her part of the world during her time... and she eventually fell foul of her local Archbishop, Cyril. Though officially a 'pagan', she still commanded considerable wealth and influence - until in 412AD...
' In the bloom of beauty, and in the maturity of wisdom, the modest maid [Hypatia] refused her lovers and instructed her disciples; the persons most illustrious for their rank or merit were impatient to visit the female philosopher; and Cyril beheld, with a jealous eye, the gorgeous train of horses and slaves who crowded the door of her academy. A rumor was spread among the Christians, that the daughter of Theon was the only obstacle to the reconciliation of the praefect and the archbishop; and that obstacle was speedily removed. On a fatal day, in the holy season of Lent, Hypatia was torn from her chariot, stripped naked, dragged to the church, and inhumanly butchered by the hands of Peter the reader, and a troop of savage and merciless fanatics: her flesh was scraped from her bones with sharp oyster shells, and her quivering limbs were delivered to the flames. The just progress of inquiry and punishment was stopped by seasonable gifts; but the murder of Hypatia has imprinted an indelible stain on the character and religion of Cyril of Alexandria.

It would appear that long before the Taliban walked the earth, Christian monks proved equally adept at dealing with mouthy and intelligent women...Everything is self-evident.
