the family that owned the chinaman.....used to have a shop in the building on the right, where the sign is.....the next two buildings to the right i stephen street...were longs the leather merchants (moved to capel street) next to that was a place that made electric floats...and to that was a family business that made wire mesh screens etc.....a few doorts further down in the back yard....they made all kinds of brushes....
the blue door on the left of the picture was ..harry woolfson's the rag merchants.....(he would not buy rags off children unless they had a letter from their parents)...
on the left on what used to be the corner of whitefriar street (before the flats were built) was the turf depot.....with the two schools next to that....
the lane sharp left led down to the carmelite church gardens...with the dinner house on the right , past the flats and the school wall....

i can only really remember the houses being knocked down....fascinated as a child by the big bulldozer....i remember the flat took a long time to build (the builder from drogheda went bust...(we made hundreds of concrete blocks in there ..all wasted..lol).....i can vaguely remember the turf depot.....and the horrible little cottages at the back of the tenements
they built the new road between the flats..(for some reasn, now known as whitefriar street....i only ever knew it as the new road.....there was a laneway from chancery lane up to the back gate of the adelaide hospital..where the entrance to mc donagh house is now......we just knew it as the alleyo.....

martinb.....if you look at the bride street end of mc donagh house....at the end of the garden....there was a wall and that was our back yard wall...(a short cut home from mc donagh house)....i also lived next to the wall that divides wood street from the small corpo houses....(the poster called bridge that posted on dub ie....was my next door neighbour).....she knows nearly everything about the area...with many photo's......
