Noel - thanks for that map. That graveyard site is right outside the window of my flat, it's actually still waste ground right now, it's clear level ground from chancery through to ship street.

I'm really surprised of the scale of the old churches in the area. That was some info you gave there Noel ,I will be doing more digging on those churches , St Peter on the mount and St Stephens church. Thanks a million for gathering it up.

A theatre on Longford street, Now that is very interesting Noel. I'm dying to hear more on that.
A few more snippets I collected Marty. This map really shows the extent of the Aungier (Lord Longford's) Estate in 1660....he owned all the land you can see in the circle and more. It was he who put the money up to build the Carmelites Church after the others fell into ruin.

The other two I knicked from an old street directory of 1862, over 200 years later....it gives an idea of who and what was where at that time. Interestingly enough, there's no mention of the Longford St Theatre Royal.....but I'll have a fair bit of stuff on that in the next week or so.

Along with that I have some info on where you can put your hands on some very very interesting info on your area....I'll PM it over to ye later on.

I still suffer leg problems, from dropping off the roof of that building,.....we we being chased by the coppers......

there was always two dealers at the corner of Stephen street/georges street.......one side sold fruit...the other sold fish or to be precise..fresh herrings.....

the other shop in Longford street was the barbers .......they were experts in hand clippers and yanking......

Joe - Do you think any photos exist of all those premises and business you mentioned around golden lane / Stephens St etc? It would be a shame if there weren't any at all.Surely we must have had someone interested in photography back then or even the corpo people taking photos?

one I know has passed away, the other I last heard of was living in London......

There ye go ! I'd seen this on Goolie alright...mind you, yill have te go hunting those four medals laid under the corners....have ye got a metal detector yet ?. Seems that whole area just outside the castle was the place to live at the time, and Francis Aungier, led the band. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis...er_of_Longford

Another interesting thing I found out while digging, was the answer to why Thomas Moores house looks nothing like it did when he was born there.
Was trying to work it out a good while back with someone who lives down there and uses JJ's, (can't remember who now), but the reason is that apparently they knocked the old building down and completely rebuilt it.

There was a hue and cry in the papers at the time, but it didn't stop it. Later, the bronze bust from the niche was allegedly, sold off for scrap....ffs.

On another note; Apparently still today, there is a classic example of stucco work on the ceiling in Fannigan's Undertakers, next to the old private medical school now Avalon House on the corner same side as the church.
I arranged things in there for me Da in 2005, and when I look back, while hanging around in their front office, I did clock how elaborate the ceiling was right enough.

Seems that whole area is steeped in rich history, but ppl like me and you, walking around about their business wouldn't have a clue.

You mentioned on another thread that a graveyard used to be on chancery lane? Where was it? Would it be where the house at the end of this pic stood?
Hi Martin - This is a picture of the corner you are asking about - the graveyard was at the back of these houses. the entrance was through a gateway in Great Ship Street, there is a car park there now but there is a sign on the wall outside with information on the graveyard and church and school that stood on the site.

Socialism doesn't mean taking money from those who work hard and giving it to those who don't.

                                You're thinking of capitalism.
